The baroque music era (c. 1600–1750) marks the dawn of classical music. It was the age of counterpoint, intricate polyphonic textures and the first breakthroughs in opera and vocal writing. Sacred music remained central, reaching extraordinary heights with Bach and Handel. Instrumental forms such as the concerto grosso (e.g. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 5) and early program music (e.g. Vivaldi's The Four Seasons).
