Chamber music was conceived for small ensembles in which every instrument plays its own independent line. The piano trio (piano, violin and cello) and the string quartet are its most typical examples. At court this was once the most common format: there were few musicians available and each played a different instrument, while full orchestras were assembled only for ceremonies, hiring extra players to double the parts. In this section you’ll find masterpieces from the Baroque to the present day, such as Schubert: Chamber Music, Beethoven, Schumann & Brahms: Piano Trios, and Mozart: Piano and Violin Sonatas, all performed by outstanding artists.
