But when the two “music giants” were joined by three-quarters of the Modern Jazz Quartet, fresh from recording their masterwork Django in the same studio the day before, the session was elevated to a league of its own once and for all.Far from the Quartet’s classical influences, the band thus formed launched into the most “modern”, groundbreaking form of jazz conceivable at the time, paving the way for a post-Charlie Parker era. (The great saxophonist would pass away less than three months later.)For the occasion, they chose a balanced repertoire: one song each by Davis, Monk, and Jackson, and one exquisite standard, The Man I Love.Magical moments abound throughout the album’s 40 minutes.
